45载光芒 8方贺台庆

It was a anniversary gala attended by more than 100 artises from Mediacorp, TCS and SBC. hahaha... I cant believe it when i saw the achievement our local television had over the last 45 years. Although it is not as impressive as TVB, the station still have support from long time fans. Starting as part of ministry's TV station to propengate govt agenda, it has now emerged as a regional media company.

I think the most impressive part is Star Search and City Beat. Oh man. I really love the 2 programs. For Star Search, the inaugural batches of Zoe, Aileen and Jazzeri were fantastic. Till today, many remembered the 3 of them. Zoe is still the queen leading the class of Star Search since 1988 till 2007! Gosh, 20 years and she is still the centre of attraction. It is so touching to see batches and batches of champions and finalists.

As for City Beat, i love the program cos it really brought me laughters during my Sec and Poly days. The program debut in 1995 when i was still a Sec 4 student. During then, i still remember the pioneer batches of 何咏芳,潘玲玲,钟琴 and 王禄江。It's damn funny yet entertaining. Like wat they said, it is more of 无厘头,which means they are free to tok cock and make you laugh.

As time progresses, the program changed. Then it added more hosts to the program. The viewership continue to soar greater heights. It was when Mediaworks Channel U came along, the program viewership deterioriated cos most of the host went over to the dyfunction Mediaworks. They got in new hosts like Jeff Wang, Deyuan but it didnt do as well as their predecessor. However, the program did created many interesting characters that till today many of us remember by heart.

As for the entire 3 hour program, the finale performance isnt as impressive as i tot. I guess only the short comedy on "经典人物" is more entertaining. Dennis Chew is a good actor. Seriously, he managed to capture the character and expression of Chen Liping on 早安老师。 hahhaha.. So funny, that i almost fell off my chair!

Anyway, i have a question, there wasnt a 40 anniversary celebration or even 30 anniversary celebration, why a 45? Zoe was asking big boss if they should still run the program next year to celebrate the birth of mediacorp. hahhhaa... I think that is for the management to decide. Probably not next year, maybe when Mediacorp celebrates 50! hahahhaha

Recessionary Fears

Its another week since i last blog. The year is almost coming to an end. In less than 45 days, we will usher into another new year. There are so many uncertainties now especially with the gloomy economic outlook and massive retrenchment exercise. The year started with a big bang but it went downhill after June. Like wat happen in 1997, everyone is getting panick over their ricebowl.

The first major retrenchment exercise was led by our national bank DBS. I am shocked when the bank decide to layoff 900 pple. I mean that is quite a substantial number. I would have expected retrenchment but not to tat extend. HSBC and Citigroup follow suit as the impact of financial turmoil sinks in. The financial sector is badly hit this time. Like wat many say, they used to earn big bucks during the good years, once the economy slumps, they have to rely on what they have earned previously. I am sure they have sufficient savings to tie over the crisis.

I wonder how things will be like in 2009. It will start off with a downturn. The Americans predict their recession will end in June. Do you think so? Have the impact been felt? Have we reached the rock bottom? I doubt so. Japan has just fallen into recession after Europe. Singapore being dependent on external trade fell into recession a quarter ago. Our neighbours are not as bad since they have support of their domestic economy.

I guess everyone is concern who is the next to go. One day if HR comes calling you or knocking on your desk, i think tat the end of the story. Hopefully i wont get affected. If it does, i have decided to go for upgrading. Ha.. Probably a better reason for me to leave the company. Other plans will be put on hold indefinitely till i finish my course. Maybe its a good time to go overseas too as i pursue my post grad degree. hahahha...

24 hour Not Enough

I have been quite busy lately. I really feel that 24 hours is insufficient for me. I need 48 hours a day. hahahha.... Time have been spent rushing around like no body business. Appointments are always full and it seems that i have no time for any form of entertainment. Well, at least on Saturday night, i still make myself to club. However, i am also getting tired of this.

To be honest, i prefer to choose to stay at home during my off days. I wanted to catch up sleep and have time alone by myself. There are times when friends called me out and i was hesistant over whether i should go. Most of the time, i would still meet them up cos i do not want to disappoint them. Due to work, i am really sick of going out. hahhaha... Well, at least i still love travel. lol

Speaking of travel, my upcoming trip in Dec is happening soon. I will be away in exotic Cambodia in early Dec. I am so looking forward to it. Time to take a break and forget about everything at work. lol. It will be a 8 day trip where we will be going to 暹粒 and 金边。According to the itenery, we will visit a number of UNESCO site. Yay! Should be exciting.

Then its our NTU trip. Chin Yin and gang wanted to have another gathering overseas. This time, due to my limited time and leave constraint, we are heading Bintan. hahhaha.... I have never been there, so decide to give it a shot. I guess things should be exp there cos everything will be paid in Sing Dollars. Boring. hahahha.. However, for the gathering and to chill, i guess it should be fine. We see how it goes!

Change has come to America!

I was part of America history! lol. Barack Obama won the election and became the first black american president. Well, if i am in New York or Chicago, honestly, i will really take to the streets to see how election is like in United States. I have always love America, not for its full democracy but more of their openess and willingness to accept change. I once told my friends i am willing to give up my citizenship for a green card! hahahha....

I was following the election since last night. Excellent coverage by international news channel. CNN, BBC, Sky News, Fox News. Oh man, their report were comprehensive and it was pretty exciting. I cant vote cos i am not an American, if not, i will fly back to states to cast. I wont cast overseas cos i would love to enjoy the election spirit.

Unlike our election here, i cant be bothered. hahhaha... I still remember on election nite, i went clubbing. Really lor, waste my time to watch the election. I really see no point. hahhaha... For America, it is really different. Although our culture cant accept their democracy, however, the way when John McCain conceded defeat was really touching. He said "American have spoken. God Bless the new president and God Bless America"

He conceded defeat graciously. Throughout the campaign, though he and Obama were at odds and attacking each other, they knew its election. No hard feelings, neither were there personal attacks. This is wat i call "TRUE SPIRIT of ELECTION". Unlike election in Asia, it is more like a drama. I guess we have more to learn.

As i watched Obama won the election with a group of SMU students, i guess Change has come to America. I am pretty surprised by the turnout in SMU. Young Singaporeans are concern about American politics than local politics. I wonder if our political scene is just too small or way too boring to talk about.

Obama will be sworned into White House on 20 Jan 2009. That is the time when the whole world watches. Time for George Bush to go. Given the recent financial turmoil, I feel its time for a change in United States. Hopefully when Obama takes over, the economic landscape will change and we will benefit in the long run too! God Bless America!
